In Her Words

When I was eighteen, I watched my father's career end. He had given thirty-two years to a union steel mill, and when the steel industry left the United States, his work left with it. He was fifty-two. He retired with a quarter of his pension and a great deal of disillusionment, and for years afterward he struggled with a harder question than money: who was he now, if not the man who did that work?

I did not have an answer then. What I had was a front-row view of what happens to a family when a career disappears and no one has built the next path. That view never left me.

When my husband and I moved to the Space Coast and I took my first job at the community college, I worked with students who were academically and economically disadvantaged, most of them the first in their families to attend college. I recognized them immediately, because I had been both of those students myself. I helped them build career exploration into their education, so that college connected to a future and not only to a major or a mascot.

My father deserved a path forward. Every student in every program we touch deserves one too.

That work taught me the difference between enrolling and arriving. Too many students were guided toward a degree and away from a career. The result was debt, doubt, and a quiet distrust of higher education. The institutions doing this work needed a partner who understood both sides: the policy that governs colleges and the labor market that hires their graduates.

That is a real calling, and it is the reason Coyne Workforce Solutions exists. After more than thirty years inside the Florida college system, I started this firm to help presidents and workforce leaders build credentials of value: stackable, employer-aligned programs that complete, place, and pay. Federal policy is finally moving in the same direction. Workforce Pell, earnings accountability, and Learning and Employment Records all reward the work I have spent my life doing, helping a student ladder from a first skill to a real career, and helping a college prove it.
